Smith Street Is Closed at FM 1488 Until September 1

By The Magnolia Standard · August 21, 2026

It is not the whole street. It is the piece of it that meets FM 1488, and it is shut while crews put drainage in the ground.

If your usual turn takes you off FM 1488 onto Smith Street, plan a different one for the next week and a half. A small portion of Smith at that intersection closed on August 18 and is expected to stay closed through September 1.

The work is storm drainage. The city described it as a reinforced concrete box installation, which is the large square culvert that carries runoff underneath a roadway instead of across it. The Magnolia Police Department put out the notice on August 17. “A small portion of Smith, at this intersection, will be closed until completion,” the department said.

Two things worth holding onto. The closure is limited to the intersection area rather than the length of the street, so businesses and homes further down Smith are still reachable from the other end. And the September 1 date is an expectation, not a promise. Drainage work runs into what is already buried more often than anyone would like, and a week of rain slows a concrete pour.

This is the unglamorous half of growth. Every rooftop and parking lot added along the corridor sheds water that used to soak into pasture, and it has to go somewhere. A box culvert under Smith Street is the answer to a problem that only shows up during a hard rain, which is also the only time anyone thinks about it.

If the closure is affecting how customers reach your business, or if you have watched that corner flood before, tell us. That is the part of a road project a map never shows.
