Texas Holds National Night Out Tonight. Magnolia Waits Until Thursday, and It Is Bringing Kangaroos.

By The Magnolia Standard · October 6, 2026

Most people meet a police officer or a firefighter on the worst day of their year. Thursday is the other kind of day.

Across most of the country, National Night Out happens on the first Tuesday in August. Texas moves it to the first Tuesday in October, because August here is no time to stand in a park. That puts the statewide date on today, Tuesday, October 6.

Magnolia is holding its own two days later. The Magnolia Police Department has set the city's National Night Out for Thursday, October 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Unity Park, 19450 Unity Park Drive. It is free and open to everyone.

What is planned

The department has been adding to the lineup since summer. As of its latest list:

  • Free food: hot dogs, cookies and drinks, with food trucks on site for anything else.
  • Touch-a-Truck: police cars, fire apparatus, ambulance equipment and other emergency vehicles parked where children can climb in and look.
  • A tug-of-war, police against fire.
  • Farm animals. The department lists donkeys, cattle and kangaroos.
  • Bounce houses, face painting and a showcase of local businesses.

Who will be there

Five agencies besides the city police are on the department's list. The Montgomery County Precinct 5 Constable's Office. Montgomery County ESD No. 10, the district that runs the Magnolia Fire Department. PHI Air Medical's Conroe base, an air ambulance service. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. And the Texas Department of Public Safety.

That spread matters more here than in most towns. A house a mile outside city limits is patrolled by the sheriff and the constable, not the city. A wreck on FM 1488 may draw a state trooper. Families who moved in this year often do not know which badge answers which call, and an evening at the park is an easier place to find out than a roadside.

Where it comes from

The National Association of Town Watch started National Night Out in 1984. The first one drew about 2.5 million people in 400 communities across 23 states. It now runs in all 50 states as block parties, cookouts and park nights, and according to the department's announcement, Magnolia is on the association's list of participating Texas communities.

Same park, a month later

Unity Park has a second date on the calendar. The City of Magnolia is holding its first-ever Fall Festival there on Saturday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The city lists more than 60 vendors, games, food and a dunk tank, where visitors can send a member of the City Council into the water. Admission is free.

For Thursday, bring a chair. Leave the kangaroos alone.
