The County Has People Whose Whole Job Is Your VA Claim. You Need an Appointment.

A county office exists to sit down with veterans and work through the paperwork. It is free. Most people around here have never heard of it.
Ask around Magnolia about VA benefits and you will hear the same thing over and over. The forms beat people. Somebody's cousin has been fighting a rating for three years. Somebody's father never filed at all because the process looked like a second job. What far fewer people know is that Montgomery County employs a small staff whose entire function is to sit on your side of that table.
The Montgomery County Veterans Service Office works with veterans, their dependents and survivors on claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs. That covers compensation and pension questions, eligibility, and the actual filling out of the forms. There is no charge. The county's own description of the work is about obtaining the most advantageous benefits available, which is a bureaucratic way of saying they are meant to get you what you are owed rather than simply process you.
There are two offices. The Conroe office is at 2247 North First Street, Suite 219. The New Caney office is at 22354 Justice Drive. Both use the same phone number, 936-539-7842, and both list the same condition in bold: appointment required. Do not drive out on a Tuesday hoping to be seen. Call first.
The office is run by Director of Veterans Services Kathy L. Smith, with Karen Karr as Veterans Service Officer and Julie Pavlock as assistant. Amber King and Vanessa Valadez handle administration. Part of the operation is supported by a grant from the Texas Veterans Commission Fund for Veterans' Assistance, which funds organizations serving veterans and their families across the state.
Medical care is separate from claims, and the county lists three outpatient clinics that serve this area. Conroe is at 690 South Loop 336 West, 936-522-4000. Tomball is at 1200 West Main Street, 281-516-1505, which for most of Magnolia is the closer drive. Humble is at 1485 FM 1960 Bypass Road, Suite 340, 281-540-5018.
None of this is new. That is rather the point. The office has been doing this work while people in Magnolia paid lawyers, argued with the VA alone, or gave up. If you served, or you are the widow or the child of someone who did, the call costs nothing.
