The Region Picked a Murder Mystery About Librarians. Magnolia's Library Is Hosting It Four Times This Month.

By The Magnolia Standard · October 2, 2026

A whodunit, two genealogy mornings and a fall party for the youngest readers, all on Melton Street.

Every fall, libraries around Houston pick one book and spend October reading it together. The program is called Gulf Coast Reads. This year readers voted, and the winner was a murder mystery about the people who work in a library.

The book is The Librarians by Sherry Thomas. It is set in Austin, with four librarians who each keep a secret and have to work out who killed two of their patrons before the suspicion lands on them. The Harris County Public Library announced in August that it won a public vote in May over Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid and Hole in the Sky by Daniel H. Wilson.

Magnolia's branch of the county library system, the Malcolm Purvis Library at 510 Melton St., took the theme and ran with it.

The murder mysteries

The library calls them Malcolm Mysteries. Three are for adults 18 and older, and the times vary, so pick the one that fits:

  • Monday, October 5, 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, October 29, 2 to 3:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 31, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Teens 12 to 18 get their own on Wednesday, October 28, from 4 to 5 p.m., billed as "There's Been a Murder." Reading the book first is not listed as a requirement.

For anyone who wants to meet the author, the Houston-area libraries are hosting an evening with Sherry Thomas on October 30 at the West University Community Center, inside the Loop.

Two mornings for family historians

Saturday, October 3, from 10 a.m. to noon, the Joanna Troutman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution runs a free genealogy workshop. The question it is built around: is one of your relatives a Revolutionary War patriot? Adults 19 and older.

Two weeks later, on Saturday, October 17, also 10 to noon, Moxxy Forensics presents "DNA, Genetic Genealogy, and Solving the Unsolvable." The subject is forensic genetic genealogy, the technique investigators now use to put names to unidentified remains and old cases. Adults 19 and older.

For the little ones

The Fall Festival is Wednesday, October 14, from 10 a.m. to noon. It is come-and-go, with games, crafts, prizes and books, aimed at children from birth to 6 but open to everyone.

The standing weekly programs keep running: Baby Social Club and toddler storytime on Thursday mornings, preschool storytime on Wednesdays, and a Trick or Treat Storytime on October 28 at 10 a.m.

Also on the calendar

  • Silent Book Club, Monday, October 19, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Bring a book, read it among other readers, no discussion required. Adults 19 and older.
  • Teen Bad Art, Fridays at 3 p.m. starting October 9. The point is to make something ugly on purpose. Ages 12 to 18.
  • Habitat for Humanity Application Fast Track, Saturday, October 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Applications have to be complete, with every supporting document, when they are turned in. Our September 11 story covered Habitat's Marble Creek homes and the class that comes first.
  • Mahjong, Monday and Friday mornings, 9:30 to noon, for beginners and regulars. Adults 19 and older.

Everything listed here is free. The library is open Monday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from 9 to 6, and Friday and Saturday from 9 to 5. It is closed Sunday. The phone is 936-522-2792.
