Five Days, Eight Species, and a Handwritten Thank-You Note That Is Not Optional

By The Magnolia Standard · September 4, 2026

The Magnolia ISD Livestock Show runs September 16 through 20. Most of the town knows it as the Saturday-night auction. The kids in it have been working since spring.

Tack goes into the Magnolia ISD show barn on Wednesday, September 16, between 5 and 8 p.m. That is the quiet start. By Saturday evening the same building holds a buyer's dinner, a sale order, and a live auction, and a lot of families find out what a year of feed bills and 5 a.m. alarms was worth.

The show is five days. Wednesday is tack and the floral build-off, which checks in at 3:30 and starts at 4. Thursday afternoon is check-in and weigh-in for swine, lambs, goats and steers, with heifers coming in the same window and an exhibitor meeting at 8 p.m. The official start time is Thursday at 4 p.m.

Friday is the long day in the ring. Hogs at 8 a.m. Lambs at 11:30, then goats after an hour's break. Rabbits check in at 4 and show at 5.

Saturday starts before most of Magnolia is up. Turkeys and broilers check in at 7 a.m., baked goods at the same time, and all three are judged from 8. Steers show at 10, heifers after. A mandatory sale order meeting at 1:30 puts every auction qualifier in one room. The buyer's dinner runs 4 to 5:30. The live auction starts at 6, and the barn closes an hour after it ends.

Then Sunday at 9 a.m. everybody comes back and cleans the barn.

What makes the rule book worth reading is the part that has nothing to do with animals. Every exhibitor gets a list of their buyers and add-on contributors on October 19. Handwritten thank-you notes are due October 22, on formal cards with matching envelopes. Notebook paper is specifically not allowed. Printer paper is specifically not allowed. Miss the deadline and it is a twenty-five dollar fine per business day.

There is a version of youth livestock that is only about the money, and the money is real: sale earnings and auction photos go out to exhibitors by the end of January. But a program that will fine a teenager for typing a thank-you note is teaching something the ribbon does not cover.

The show committee is drawn from agricultural science teachers across the district, at Magnolia High School and Magnolia West, at Magnolia Junior High, Bear Branch, and Magnolia Parkway, alongside the FFA booster clubs at both high schools. Steer entries and validation dates run all the way back to last winter. Heifer, baked goods and floral entries closed August 28.

If you have never been, the auction on Saturday night is the one to see. Admission to watch costs nothing, the barn is loud, and the kids are the ones doing the work.
