Last Year Magnolia Won It 45-12. This Friday They Arrive 0-2 and the Mustangs Are Unbeaten.

One town, two high schools, one game. Friday night at Mustang Stadium, and the form book has been turned completely upside down since the last time these two met.
The Magnolia Bowl is Friday, September 11, at Magnolia West. It is a district game in 15-6A, it is the one night a year when half the town wears one color and half wears the other, and this year it arrives with the two teams in almost exactly opposite positions to the ones they held the last time they met.
Magnolia is 0-2. They opened at home against Willis on August 28 and lost 38-0, which is as bad a night as a football team has. Then last Thursday they went to College Station and lost 30-27. That second scoreline is the one worth holding on to, because a three-point road loss is not the same animal as a shutout, and it says the Bulldogs found something in the week between.
Magnolia West is 2-0. They went to Bryan on the 28th and won 56-24, then came home last Thursday and beat Cypress Creek 31-17. Two games, two wins, and 87 points scored.
Now the part that makes Friday interesting. The last time these two played, on Halloween night last year, Magnolia won it 45-12. Not a squeaker. A rout. The same program that is now winless has the most recent word in this rivalry, and it is a loud one.
That is the thing about a crosstown game. Records stop meaning very much when the kids on both sidelines went to the same junior high, know each other's younger brothers, and have been hearing about this fixture since August. A 0-2 team with a grudge and a short drive is not a safe opponent.
The rivalry only exists at all because Magnolia West opened in 2008. Before that there was one high school in town and no bowl to play for. Eighteen years is not long as these things go, and it is long enough that parents in the stands Friday will have played in it themselves.
Kickoff is Friday at Magnolia West. If you have not been to one, this is the one to pick.
