Celia Hernández came home to Magnolia with a meat counter, a taquería and a bakery

By The Magnolia Standard · October 9, 2026

Don Tomate's third store did not land in Magnolia by accident. Its owner grew up here.

Celia Hernández grew up in Magnolia. Years later she came back with a family business in tow. Don Tomate Meat Market, which she and her husband Antonio opened in February 2020, already had stores in Tomball and Cypress when the family decided the third would go on FM 1488. It opened June 7, 2025, in Suite 100.

It is a neighborhood grocery with several businesses inside. There is a meat counter with premium cuts, a taquería running daily specials, a bakery turning out pan dulce every morning, fresh produce, and grocery aisles stocked from Mexico, Central America and South America: dried chiles, spices, Mexican candy and pantry staples. They carry household goods too, the kind you forget until you are already in line.

The meat is what people talk about. According to Community Impact's report on the opening, some customers drive in from Galveston for the fajita meat. If you live in Magnolia, it is now around the corner.

When the family announced the store, they described the market as a gathering place, somewhere to enjoy the richness of Latin American cooking and what happens around a shared table. In a town growing as fast as Magnolia, with new families arriving every month, having the butcher, the taquería and the pan dulce under one roof saves more than one trip.

Hours are Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Magnolia store's number is (281) 571-3661. If you already shop there, tell us the first thing you order.
