One Week Left to Unearth a Story at the County Libraries
By The Magnolia Standard · July 17, 2026
The library system's summer reading program closes July 25. There's still time for Magnolia-area families to finish, and every page counts toward the total.
The Montgomery County Memorial Library System has been running its summer reading program, "Unearth a Story," since June 1. It closes July 25. That leaves about a week for kids and parents who started strong in June, or who have a stack of half-finished library books on the kitchen table, to log the rest and wrap it up. Nobody has to catch up on a whole summer. A few days of reading before the deadline still gets a family across the line.
Tracking is simple. Readers keep count in the Reader Zone app or on a printed log, whichever is easier. You can record books finished or minutes spent reading, so a slow chapter-book reader and a kid who tears through picture stacks both get credit for the effort. Every format counts. Print books, audiobooks, e-books, and articles all go in the tally, which means a car-ride audiobook on the way back from Houston is reading too.
The program has never been only about the log. Free events ran across the branches all summer: magicians, bubble shows, puppet theater, arts and crafts, wildlife presentations, coding activities, scavenger hunts, and storytelling. All ages are welcome, not just school-age children. A toddler who sat through a bubble show and a grandparent working through a novel are both part of the same count.
There's a quieter reason the last week matters. School starts before long, and reading that stops cold in June is harder to restart in August than reading that never fully stopped. A child who keeps a book going through July walks into the first week of class already in the habit. The deadline is a soft on-ramp, not a finish line.
Sign-up and the full event and branch details are at countylibrary.org. The program runs across the library system's Montgomery County branches, which serve Magnolia-area families. If you signed up in June and lost track, the log picks up right where you left it, and there's no penalty for a light week or two along the way.
