The School Zones Wake Up August 12. So Does the Ticket for Your Phone.
By The Magnolia Standard · July 14, 2026
For nine weeks the drive was easy. On the twelfth, the kids are back at the curb and the rules come back with them.
Magnolia ISD starts back on August 12, and the morning drive changes that day whether you have a kid in the district or not. The school-zone lights start flashing again on the roads near every campus, the crossing guards are back, and the two rules that get expensive fastest are back in force. Both are easy to follow and easy to forget after a summer of open roads.
The first is your phone. In Texas it is against the law to use a handheld phone while driving through an active school zone. Not only texting. Holding the phone at all. The zone is "active" when those yellow lights are flashing or the posted times are in effect, and that is exactly when kids are stepping off curbs. Put it down before you reach the zone and there is nothing to think about.
The second is the bus. When a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and its stop arm out, traffic has to stop, in both directions on most roads, and stay stopped until the arm folds back and the bus moves. This is the one drivers rationalize when they are running late, and it is the one that puts a child in the road in front of a moving car. The fine for passing a stopped bus is steep on purpose.
Everything else is just giving yourself room. School traffic adds a few minutes to the same drive that was quick in July, so leave earlier than feels necessary for the first week while everyone relearns the pattern. Slow down near the campuses even when the lights are off. The kids are new to it too.
Sources: the Magnolia ISD 2026–27 calendar, which lists August 12 as the first day of school; the Texas Transportation Code, which bars handheld phone use in an active school zone and requires drivers to stop for a school bus loading or unloading with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. This is a general safety reminder; specific school-zone hours are posted at each campus. Corrections to newsroom@themagnoliastandard.news.
