If You Qualify for Reduced-Price Lunch, You Pay Nothing. You Still Have to File.

The state is paying the reduced-price copay through 2027. Magnolia ISD opens meal applications August 1. A different deadline, the one that decides whether your kid has a schedule on day one, hits Friday.
There are two school-meal categories that families in Magnolia have always had to sort out. Free, and reduced-price. The first cost nothing. The second cost a few coins a day, every day, times however many kids you were packing off to Bear Branch or Magnolia Elementary. Those coins added up over 175 school days.
They're gone for now. The 89th Texas Legislature put $19.8 million into the state budget, Senate Bill 1, to cover the reduced-price breakfast and lunch copay for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 school years. A student who qualifies for reduced-price meals eats at no charge. Statewide, the change reaches roughly 101,000 students who were paying that reduced rate for lunch.
The catch is the same catch it always was. Nobody gets it automatically. The district has to have a meal application on file with your household's income on it, and it has to be a current one. Magnolia ISD opens the 2026-27 applications online August 1 through its child nutrition portal. Applications are accepted any time during the year, so a family whose situation changes in January can file in January. Chief Nutrition Director Kimberly Ohlendorf's office reviews them.
If you'd rather do it on paper or ask a person, the Child Nutrition Office is at 110 South Magnolia Blvd., Suite 300. Your child's campus can also hand you an application.
For everybody who doesn't qualify, here's what the district set for 2026-27: breakfast is $1.50. Lunch is $2.75 at the elementary campuses and $3.00 at intermediate, junior high and high school. Those are the numbers to plan the month around.
The Friday deadline. Separate from any of this, returning Magnolia ISD students have to be verified through the Frontline Parent Portal by July 31. That's this Friday. The district has said plainly that schedules and homeroom teacher assignments will not be released until the verification form is done. A parent who skips it doesn't lose a seat, but does spend the first morning of school sorting out where their kid is supposed to be. First day is Wednesday, August 12.
One more date worth putting on the refrigerator: the state's sales-tax holiday runs August 7 through 9, which is the weekend before Meet the Teacher at the elementary campuses on Monday, August 10.
