$25 a Year, Any Campus, If You're Over 50
By The Magnolia Standard · July 28, 2026
No tests, no transcripts, no degree at the end of it. Lone Star College runs a membership program for adults 50 and older that costs less than a tank of gas for the whole year.
Twenty-five dollars. That is the entire annual membership for Lone Star College's Academy for Lifelong Learning, and it covers every participating campus in the system, not just the one nearest your house. The program is built for adults 50 and older. There are no educational prerequisites, which in plain language means nobody asks what you did or didn't finish in 1974.
What you get for the membership is a catalog of free and low-cost classes, events and activities. Technology, for the people tired of asking a grandchild to fix the phone. Health and wellness. Financial planning. Genealogy, which around here tends to turn into county history in a hurry. Arts and crafts, literary discussion, community service projects.
Seven campuses take part: CyFair, Houston North, Kingwood, Montgomery, North Harris, Tomball and University Park. For most of Greater Magnolia the two that matter are Tomball and Montgomery, and the $25 gets you into both. A Dobbin resident can take a Tuesday class in Montgomery and a Thursday class in Tomball on the same membership.
Fall open houses are the easy on-ramp. They run August 12 through 14 and again on August 19, with times and locations set by each campus. Coordinators recommend signing up ahead of the semester rather than walking in cold, because popular classes fill. One practical note from the campuses: some open houses take the $25 in cash or check only, so don't count on a card at the table.
Registration is also open online year-round through the college's continuing education portal. If you'd rather talk to somebody first, the Montgomery campus office is at 936.273.7259 and Tomball is at 281.401.1868. Both have an academy-specific email address on the college's website.
Membership fees are non-refundable, which is worth knowing before you sign. At $25, it is a low bar for finding out whether a Thursday morning class is your kind of thing.
