Doctor, Dentist and Pharmacy Under One Roof: A New Health Center Is Taking Patients on FM 1488

For years, a Magnolia family without good insurance had a long drive ahead of them when somebody got sick. The nearest sliding-scale clinic meant a trip to Conroe or Spring. That gap closed in July. Lone Star Family Health Center is now seeing patients at 18230 FM 1488, Suite 203, in the Landmark Building, with family medicine, women's health, dental care, behavioral health and pharmacy services in one office.

Lone Star is a nonprofit that has worked Montgomery County since 2002, and it is a federally qualified health center. That designation matters more than the mouthful suggests. Health centers with it are required by federal rules to see patients regardless of ability to pay, with fees set on a sliding scale by household income. Insured, underinsured, uninsured: the front desk works with all three. The Magnolia office is the organization's sixth, joining its Conroe headquarters and clinics in Willis, Spring, Grangerland and Huntsville.

"The opening of our Magnolia Health Center is an important milestone in our mission to ensure every individual and family has access to high-quality, compassionate health care," CEO Karen Harwell said in the organization's announcement.

The starting lineup is small but complete. Family nurse practitioner Georjene Parker handles medical visits. On the dental side, Dr. Alissa Medina and hygienist Andrea St. Clair are seeing patients. Appointments are booked through the organization's main line at 936-539-4004.

Why it matters here is simple arithmetic. Magnolia is one of the fastest-growing corners of the county, and the clinics have not kept pace with the rooftops. A doctor's office on FM 1488 that takes patients no matter what their insurance card says, with a dentist and a pharmacy down the hall, is the kind of quiet infrastructure a growing town needs at least as much as it needs another turn lane.
